Federal team Arrives at Mercy Health Muskegon to Support Health Care Workers Treating COVID-19 Patients

15-person team from the U.S. Air Force assigned for 30 days

Muskegon, Mich. (January 4, 2022) – At the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Air Force members arrived at Mercy Health Muskegon on December 30, 2021 to help provide much-needed medical assistance onsite. This 15-person team will support the health care workers who are treating COVID-19 patients.

The team, consisting of two physicians, five nurses, seven medics and one administration support person, will be assigned to Mercy Health Muskegon for the next 30 days. They will be filling clinical roles within the hospital according to their training. The medics will be utilized in both the Emergency Department and the monoclonal antibody (mAB) clinic.

“Mercy Health Muskegon is truly grateful for the clinical support being provided by the skilled team of Air Force men and women deployed on our behalf,” said Justin Grill, DO, chief medical officer, Mercy Health Muskegon. “They are working alongside our full-time clinical team providing care to the members of our community. Each individual comes with a unique set of skills and experiences, and we have worked with the team leadership to most fully utilize each individual deployed to Muskegon.”

The federal staffing team comes as Michigan hospitals are experiencing a spike in COIVD-19 patients, the vast majority of whom are unvaccinated. We are encouraging our community members to get vaccinated and get boosted if they are eligible. To help limit the spread of COVID-19, we still recommend wearing a mask, avoiding large crowds when possible, washing your hands frequently, staying home if you are sick, and getting tested if you suspect you may have COVID-19.
